The Department of Pharmacy Practice was established in 2003 and located in Kovai Medical Center and Hospital, Coimbatore. Our Department strives to provide students with the skills necessary to practice pharmaceutical care upon entering the profession irregardless of the practice environment. The goal of pharmaceutical care is to improve an individual patient's quality of life through achievement of definite, medication-related therapeutic outcomes. The Drug and Poison Information Center, Department of Pharmacy Practice is unit of KMCH College of Pharmacy, and was its service at Kovai Medical Center and Hospital on 05-01-2004.
Functions of Our Department
Through innovative teaching methods, the Department provides the skills necessary to foster critical thinking and the optimal use of medications, while promoting professionalism. Educate and train Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students, post-PharmD residents and M.Pharm fellows, and practicing pharmacists who become nationally recognized for their leadership, knowledge and competence in practice, research, and/or teaching roles.
Drug Information Services
The Drug & Poison Information Center is well utilized by health professionals and provides a high profile service. The center provides current drug information from standard monographs, text books, internet resources and subscribed databases such as Iowa Drug Information System (IDIS), Micromedx – Drugdex, etc.
Ward Round Participation
Both the faculties and postgraduate students participate in daily ward rounds of various medicine units and other specialized units like Pediatrics, Dermatology, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Neurology, Medical & Surgical Oncology, Gastro-enterology etc..
A spontaneous reporting of ADR Monitoring system was successfully implemented in the month of November 2004. ADR reporting form was distributed to all the out-patient clinics in KMCH and all the necessary and relevant data were collected and documented and were assessed by panel of Judges.
Patient counselling was successfully implemented by our department and it has published handouts for the Diabetes and Hypertension patients to improve patient's compliance.
Department of Pharmacy Practice provide toxicological information and advice Medical/Paramedical/Public on the management of poisoned patients adapted to the level of the enquirer. This service is based on the databases on poisoning, drug reactions and also the continuous and systematic collection of data from the library.
In addition to the central library our department is having a separate departmental library with latest reference books of national and international authors
Research activities in the department
Create through research, and disseminate in the biomedical literature, new scientific knowledge about the effective, safe, and economical use of medications with the intent of improving the rational use of drugs in patients and in society. The department practice-based faculty, along with an extensive practitioner-educator network, provides innovative, interdisciplinary pharmacy practice experiences that foster students as integral members of the health care team
